- Strauss said, Peterson should have got a chance even after not fully following the discipline
- Strauss and Peterson had a lot of controversy over the IPL policy of the England Cricket Board.
- When Strauss became the ‘Cricket Director’ of the ECB, he prepared a special program to participate in the IPL.
- Peterson targeted Matt Prior and Stuart Broad in the autobiography, referring to his exit from the team in 2014-15.
Former England captain Andrew Strauss admitted that he did not resolve Kevin Pietersen’s issues properly. Strauss believes that this aggressive batsman should have got a chance even after not fully following the discipline.
Strauss, however, said that he understands why Indian Premier League (IPL) players are important but if they prefer IPL over Test cricket, it will set a wrong example. Strauss and Peterson had a lot of controversy over the England Cricket Board’s IPL policy.
Strauss told Sky Sports, “I have always had sympathy with KP (Peterson) for the IPL. I understood that in the IPL, big players from all over the world play together and there is a huge amount of money given to the players. ‘
The special thing is that when Strauss became the ‘Director of Cricket’ of the ECB, he designed a special program for England players to participate in the IPL which Pietersen advocated for the longest time. He said, ‘I felt for a long time that the IPL needed a window. I told the ECB that we cannot compete with each other because it would have become a big problem for the team. ‘
The former captain said, “At the same time, I also felt that it is very dangerous to give the player permission to play in the IPL, except Test cricket. With this, you are teaching young players that IPL is more important than Test cricket. ‘
Stoss said that he had explained several times to Peterson that Test cricket was more important. He said, ‘I was saying to KP at that time,’ Listen, friends – this is the situation. You cannot choose to come and go in the team again and again from international cricket. You have to fulfill the responsibility you have got for England and I hope you get such gaps where IPL can also play. ‘
Pietersen, in his autobiography, also criticized Stoss, targeting Matt Prior and Stuart Broad for referring to his exit from the team in 2014–15. He wrote that Strauss did not support him then.
